nicuVitals is a neonatal patient-monitor simulator for teaching and training. It is free, on the web and on iOS.
Getting started
On one device
Open the app, choose Use this device, and you get a monitor with the controls on a panel that slides up from the bottom. Swipe the panel down to watch the monitor; tap CONTROLS at the bottom of the screen to bring it back.
With a second screen
Choose Use a separate screen. The device you are holding keeps the controls and shows a six-character room code and a QR code. On the second screen — a colleague's phone, a spare tablet, a ward laptop, a smart TV — open nicuvitals.nicutools.org, choose the monitor role, and enter that code. Anything with a browser works; nothing needs to be installed on it.
Common questions
The monitor shows dashes and “PULSE SEARCH”
That is the intended starting state: a baby with nothing attached. Tap SATS PROBE in the controls (or Apply sats probe on the monitor itself). The numbers then behave like a real oximeter finding a signal — about five seconds of nothing, then a fifteen-second acquisition ramp before they settle.
I changed a number and nothing happened
Values move to their new target over roughly twelve seconds, in steps, rather than jumping. This is deliberate — a real monitor averages, and a number that snaps instantly teaches the wrong thing. Set the slider and wait, or use a preset.
The numbers drift by one or two
Also deliberate. Displayed values wander slightly around whatever you set, because a monitor showing a perfectly static number does not look like a patient.
The second screen will not connect
- Check the code was entered exactly as it appears.
- Both devices need a working internet connection.
- The room exists only while a screen is connected to it. If both ends have been closed, start a new one rather than reusing the old code.
“This screen was replaced by a newer connection”
Something opened the same role twice — usually the same monitor page in two tabs, or a phone that was locked and then reconnected. The newest connection wins, which is what lets a backgrounded phone rejoin its own room. Close the older tab and carry on.
The screen keeps going to sleep
On the web monitor, tap the screen once when it opens. Browsers only allow a page to hold the screen awake after a deliberate tap, so the monitor asks for one before it starts. The iOS app holds the screen open by itself and needs no tap.
The web monitor also pauses itself after thirty minutes with no activity from the controller, so a forgotten tab does not sit lit overnight. Tap it to resume.
There is no sound
The pulse tone starts off. Switch Pulse tone on in the controls, and check the device's own volume. Note that the Apgar milestone alerts at one and five minutes sound whether or not the pulse tone is on — they are the clock speaking, not the monitor.
Using the Apgar clock
Switch Apgar clock on in the controls and a timer appears on the monitor, with controls to start, reset and adjust it. It beeps at one minute and five minutes.
Does it work without a network?
The iOS app running on one device makes no network calls at all — it is fully offline. Driving a second screen needs a connection at both ends, since that is the only thing the two screens have in common.
Is it free?
Yes. Both the web version and the iOS app are free, with no accounts, no subscriptions and no in-app purchases.
What nicuVitals is not
nicuVitals is a simulator for education and training. It is not a medical device, it does not measure anything, and it must never be used for clinical decisions or patient care. Every screen carries a SIMULATION ONLY label for this reason.
